Fall’s mild weather makes it a great time to get outdoors and enjoy some seasonal fun. In addition to getting some fresh air, you can give your joints a workout to help them stay in good condition. Consider adding the following activities to your autumn to-do list for healthy joints.
Take Nature Hikes
Fall foliage creates scenic surroundings, especially in wooded areas. Look for nature trails near you, so you can take in these stunning views and exercise your legs. Wear a sturdy pair of hiking shoes that provide good support, so you won’t strain your knee joints while walking. Choose trails that aren’t too steep or difficult for you to hike on in order to lower your risk of muscle strain or injuries. Have your smartphone or camera ready to take pictures during your hike, pack some healthy snacks, and bring plenty of water with you to stay hydrated.
Pick Apples
Apples are in season during fall, which makes it an ideal time to go apple picking. Visit a local orchard where you can walk around picking apples from apple trees. Wear comfortable shoes, and keep a bag or basket handy to hold the apples you pick. If you plan to pick a lot, consider bringing a wagon with you to hold them all. Apple picking gives your legs a workout as you walk around, while grabbing apples from trees and pulling them off helps you exercise your arm, wrist, and finger joints. When you’re done, you’ll have plenty of apples to enjoy as healthy snacks.
Carve Pumpkins
Turning pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns is a fun way to celebrate fall and put your creative skills to use. This activity also gives your arm, wrist, and finger joints a solid workout, since you’ll need to carve an opening, scoop out the insides of your pumpkins, and carve a face or other design on them. Use pumpkin carving tools that make it easier to clean out and carve pumpkins if you have any joint pain or stiffness in your hands. Keep in mind that you can set the pumpkin seeds aside, and roast them in the oven for a tasty and nutritious snack.
Attend Fall Festivals and Fairs
Many towns and cities hold festivals and fairs during fall. These events are a good way to get outside, spend time with loved ones, and have a great time. Whether you go to a local fair with rides and attractions or attend a fall festival featuring arts and crafts or food, you’ll be on your feet for at least a couple of hours. Make sure you have comfortable shoes on with good support to handle all of that walking.
